Ventura College football head coach Steve Mooshagian has announced that 11 Pirates from the 2025 Northern Conference champions have signed early with four-year schools across the country. Many are mid-year transfers working out with their new teams this spring. Six have matriculated to NCAA Division I schools, five in the Football Championship Series, another to NCAA Division II and four to NAIA schools.
VC tight end Ryan Gillum and wide receiver and kick returner Tayvion McCoy were named first team All-Americans and All-State by the JC Athletic Bureau in voting by the California Community College Football Coaches Association. Additionally, offensive linemen Jackson Perkins and Jack Sloniker, quarterback Braesen Leon, all-purpose back Koen Glover, placekicker Bohdie Ing and defensive back Charlie Neos earned All-State honors. McCoy was twice named All-State, both as a wide receiver and as a punt returner.
The Pirate football team was prominent on the Southern California Football Association's All-Northern Conference awards announced earlier this month. VC had 14 first team selections, including eight individuals who were unanimously chosen for nine categories. Tayvion McCoy led the honorees as he was a unanimous pick as a wide receiver and punt return specialist and Charlie Neos was VC's lone unanimous pick on defense.
The Pirates were riding a wave of momentum. They had scored 17 unanswered points to start the second half, including a 70-yard pick-six by Charlie Neos, to take a 31-21 lead at No. 1-ranked Golden West early in the fourth quarter. But a huge touchdown return on the ensuing kick swung the momentum back to the Rustlers and they rode it to a 56-38 decision over No. 4 VC in the SCFA semifinals Saturday afternoon in Huntington Beach.
